Goodbye Charles!

August 01, 2026

It is with much sadness that we announce the departure of Dr. Charles Baynham from the AION experiment and the Ultracold Strontium Lab at Imperial. He will be heading to IonQ where he will help lead the effort to develop trapped-ion based quantum computers.

Charles joined the experiment and Imperial from NPL since the start in 2021 where he co-led the group with Dr. Richard Hobson. Together, they have led the efforts to build and demonstrate the world’s first strontium-87 differential atom interferometer operating at the standard quantum limit. Outside of the lab, Charles has also been involved in multiple outreach events to help facilitate the general public’s understanding of atomic clocks and our research in general. We will particularly miss his technical wizardry and his enthusiastic and optimistic attitude to all problems.

Goodbye and good luck!
